Title: Catching the Light
Author/Team: T'Lara (Larissa Bernstein) / Team Rainbow Fish
Fandom/Original: Star Trek TOS
Rating: all audiences
Triggers: none
Summary: The curious mix of bone-deep exhaustion, relief, joy, and worry made it near impossible to get some shut-eye, no matter how strongly both his body and his mind craved it. Kirk tried again to will himself to relax, to calm down, but his whole being was still vibrating with adrenaline and energy, and the moment he tried to close his eyes, a flood of images swept over him.

Summary: The island county fair always brings along whatever novelty is all the rage in the mainland. This year, someone set up a photo booth.

Another year, another county fair. Anne, back from Queens for the day, walked arm in arm with Marilla between the rows of prized vegetables. Adulthood had darkened her hair to the auburn she'd so hoped for and slowed her step to a more reasonable pace, but her tongue still ran faster than the mind could follow. This time the object of her excitement was a new process for coloring photographs, growing in popularity in the mainland but still largely unknown to their little island community, and for the demonstration of which a small booth had been set up in this very fair,

“And they call this process autochrome, Marilla, doesn't that sound wonderful? It's no lake of shimmering waters, of course, but it has such a modern ring to it. Auto-chrome. Why, I can't think of a better word!”

Marilla certainly could. She could, in fact, think of many better words right now. Frivolous was a good one. Hare-brained. Senseless. A pointless waste of time and money, meant only to stroke your vanity.

Those words she kept to herself. She had learned to read Anne’s wildest moods in the years they’d had her, and right now Marilla saw in her the same mulish determination she put in all the things that truly mattered to her: a friend in need; the life of a fox; her own family history, painstakingly pieced together from church records and second-hand accounts and still paper-thin in the end. And what of the Cuthberts, then? What did Mathew and Marilla have to show for their own history? An old amethyst brooch. A wedding dress, never worn. Records kept out of habit in a book that would have ended with them if it hadn’t been for this happiest of accidents, a daughter delivered to them by mistake.

What would Anne even have, to remember them by?

“Oh, all right, then. But just this once, mind you, and for the love of God fix your hair first—you don't want look back at this in ten years only to realize what a frightful mess you were, do you?”
