april fools day; baby sitters club; general audiences; concrit welcome
Janine was Claudia’s older sister, and she was a bonafide, certified, genius. Mr. and Mrs. Kishi had gotten her a computer over the winter break, and Claudia had spent the entire time between then and now complaining about Janine’s use of it. Mary Anne wasn’t sure why. It wasn’t as if Claudia had ever wanted to hang out with Janine when she hadn’t had a computer.
Kristy gave her a knowing gaze. “Because, Mary Anne, it’s a joke.”
“Yeah,” Claudia chimed in. “It’s supposed to be funny. It’s April Fools Day. Janine will get a big kick out of it.”
Mary Anne scrunched up her nose in thought. She hated April Fools Day. Her dad had told her that pranking people was juvenile, and that what people thought would be amusing to them, often wasn’t amusing to others. In fact, he had explained to her that pranks were often cruel. Especially to the victim. Wasn’t Janine a victim?
“I don’t think it’s very funny,” she settled on. “Even though it’s April Fools Day.”
“Well,” Kristy said, after a moment. “We’re doing it. Whether you want to, or not.”
She really didn’t want to. “My dad will get mad at me,” she muttered. Her gaze cast to the ground. Kristy and Claudia would get mad at her too. Mary Anne’s dad, however, was more important. She didn’t want him to say she needed an afterschool sitter again. “I have to go home.”
