Summary: Laundry day was a necessary evil, but it was also an oddly satisfying activity; cleaning a garment of the sordid traces his kind of lifestyle in the cellars and secret passageways inevitably left — soot and dust and sewer water and suchlike — and, much worse, of the marks of his bodily existence itself — sweat and make-up and blood and whatnot — often felt like a ritual purification that erased the past at least to the extent of sartorial evidence.
